Training for the Fiji Finals has sparked a drive for success within the Vunisea Secondary School athletics team, which recently returned to compete after a four-year absence. Their invigorating training on the picturesque beaches of Kadavu, despite limited facilities, has prepared them well for this critical event.
Coaching official Jovesa Latianara shared insights into their preparation, stating, “We have no proper gym like in Suva, but we work hard on the ground and utilize the beach for sand drills.” He expressed high hopes for their performance at the upcoming Coca-Cola Games, noting that with just days to go, the athletes are in excellent shape and eager to compete over three days of intense athletics.
The team’s recent victory at the Maritime Zone competition showcased their talent and hard work, as they emerged as overall champions with an impressive haul of 20 gold, 10 silver, and 7 bronze medals—a total of 37 medals. This powerful performance marks a significant comeback for Vunisea, which entered the zone competition with 28 athletes and an enthusiastic support team of 10 teachers.
Latianara also extended gratitude to the supporters in Suva, as well as calling upon former students to rally behind the team at the finals. The Coca-Cola Games promise to be a thrilling showcase of athletic talent, starting tomorrow and concluding on Saturday, with fans ready to see which schools will rise to the occasion.
The inclusive atmosphere fostered by community and school support is a hallmark of this event, where numerous athletes from various schools aspire to excel, as seen in past articles. The increasing enthusiasm in youth athletics and the collective spirit of competition indicate a hopeful future for Fiji’s sports landscape, inspiring young athletes to pursue excellence and create lasting memories on the track.
