Two individuals are set to appear in the Suva Magistrates Court today, facing charges of obtaining financial advantage by deception, as reported by the Fiji Police Cyber Task Force.
In the first case, a 30-year-old woman from Lami allegedly deceived a victim by soliciting a $3,000 investment for an online opportunity on August 3, 2023. When the victim did not see a return on her investment, she reported the incident at the Tavua Police Station, leading to the woman’s arrest for one count of obtaining financial advantage.
In a separate case, a 26-year-old man is accused of unlawfully obtaining $400 from another victim on June 24, 2023, under similar fraudulent pretenses. After failing to provide the promised investment feedback, the victim also reported the incident to the Tavua Police Station. He has been charged with one count of obtaining financial advantage by deception.
These incidents reflect a growing trend of online investment fraud in Fiji, emphasizing the need for increased vigilance and awareness among potential investors. Public awareness campaigns and police efforts are critical in combating such scams and protecting the community.
It’s a hopeful reminder that by reporting fraud, victims can contribute to wider investigations, potentially limiting such deceitful practices in the future and holding the perpetrators accountable.
