A tsunami watch has been issued for all low-lying coastal areas of Fiji following a powerful undersea earthquake near Russia. The Fiji Mineral Resources Department’s Seismology Section issued an advisory at 1:24 PM today, stating that the watch specifically pertains to low-lying coastal regions.

The Seismology Section emphasized the necessity for residents near these coastal areas to remain vigilant and follow precautionary measures. They urged the public to be on standby and alert for updates regarding the situation. The advisory warned that strong and unusual currents could be expected, alongside unpredictable surges at the shore.

This tsunami watch comes in the wake of a magnitude 8.7 earthquake that occurred at 11:24:50 AM Fiji time, approximately 104 kilometers east-southeast of Kamchatka Krai, Russia, at a depth of 74 kilometers.

Fijians are encouraged to keep informed through local media as the watch remains in effect. The Seismology Section has committed to closely monitor the situation until the threat has passed, ensuring that public safety is prioritized.

In light of recent seismic activity, including a notable 7.3 magnitude earthquake that previously prompted a tsunami watch in Fiji, this situation serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire. The awareness and readiness of communities are crucial in ensuring safety during such unpredictable events, demonstrating resilience in the face of natural disasters.

Community preparedness remains vital, with authorities reminding residents of the importance to stay informed and ready to respond swiftly to any further developments.
