FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A trough of low pressure, combined with a moist east to southeasterly wind flow, is bringing cloud, showers and isolated thunderstorms to parts of the Fiji group. The heaviest activity is concentrated over southern and eastern Viti Levu, the Yasawa group, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, with periods of unsettled weather expected through tonight and into Friday.

To midnight, occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected across southern, eastern and interior Viti Levu (including Ra‑Rakiraki, Tailevu North, Naitasiri, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Serua‑Namosi, Sigatoka‑Korolevu and coastal Serua‑Namosi), the Yasawa group, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and surrounding islands. Cloudy periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms, with heavy falls at times, are likely over the Yasawa group, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, and parts of Southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces. Elsewhere conditions will be partly cloudy with afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Isolated heavy falls are likely in the areas of more persistent activity. Localised heavy rain may lead to flash flooding of low‑lying and flood‑prone areas, so residents in susceptible locations should remain alert. Winds will be moderate to fresh from the east to southeast and seas are expected to be moderate to rough, so marine and coastal interests should take care.

The outlook for Friday remains unsettled for many islands: occasional showers with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls are forecast for the eastern and interior parts of Viti Levu (Ra‑Rakiraki, Tailevu North, Naitasiri, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori and Serua‑Namosi), the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, as well as the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Taveuni and nearby islands and the Northern Division. Elsewhere it will be partly cloudy with afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms.

Local forecasts for populated centres reflect this pattern. Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with temperatures near 23 to 31°C, with Friday again showing a risk of heavy falls. Natadradave/Korovou has similar conditions (23–31°C, heavy falls possible on Friday). Yasawa and the Mamanucas will see cloudy periods and showers (23–30°C), becoming more unsettled Friday. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba are partly cloudy with afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms (23–33°C today, highs near 32°C on Friday). Sigatoka/Coral Coast, Tavua/Rakiraki, Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu, Taveuni, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu all have varying chances of afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms, with many locations carrying the possibility of heavier falls through Friday.

Rotuma will remain under a southeasterly flow and is mostly fine apart from brief showers. Winds are moderate to fresh and seas moderate to rough, with temperatures around 24 to 32°C. Friday’s outlook for Rotuma is for cloudy periods with brief showers.
