A Category One Tropical Cyclone, named Tam, is currently situated far southwest of the Fiji Group and is not expected to make direct landfall. However, Fiji is under heavy rain alert as an active trough of low pressure brings rainfall across the region over the next few days.
The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a heavy rain warning applicable to several areas including the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Viti Levu, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands. The agency cautions that flash flooding could occur in low-lying informal settlements and urban areas with inadequate drainage, leading to disruptions in traffic and potential hazards for communities.
This situation mirrors previous warnings related to topical disturbances that have threatened heavy rainfall and flooding in Fiji, emphasizing the importance of preparedness. Just recently, a similar disturbance, known as TD 01F, prompted similar alerts as it moved across the region, causing residents to take necessary precautions against flooding.
Residents are urged to stay vigilant, as forecasts indicate the possibility of significant rainfall which may lead to increased river levels and localized flash flooding in areas already impacted by rain. With community awareness and prompt action, Fiji’s residents can work together to manage the impacts of these heavy weather conditions.
While the potential for heavy rain poses risks, it also highlights the community’s resilience. Preparing adequately and supporting one another during challenging weather events fosters a stronger, united front against nature’s unpredictability.
