Residents of Newtown, Cuvu, Nadroga, are in shock after a community member’s body was found floating in the Cuvu River yesterday.

The deceased has been identified as Ravnit Dass, 32, a mechanic. His body was discovered by two farmers working on their plantations next to the river.

Ravnit Dass’s father, Rattan Kumar, 66, reported that their last conversation was on Monday night. “He came home around 7pm, dropped off his tools, and mentioned he was going to a friend’s house,” Mr. Kumar said. “That was the last time I spoke to him until his body was found today.”

This incident has been described as a significant loss to the community by Nadroga Navosa Advisory Council chairman Subrail Narayan. “He used to fix my vehicle. He was smart, hard-working, and had a good heart,” Mr. Narayan said.

Police spokesperson Wame Bautolu stated that the police were notified around midday. “Police managed to identify the male deceased, and other particulars will be known later. The investigation continues,” he said.

Funeral arrangements will proceed following the post-mortem examination.
