Local authorities are once again emphasizing the importance of responsible alcohol consumption in light of a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of two men after being struck by a bus on Wednesday. The unfortunate event took place in Waitolu, Naitasiri, and involved the men, aged 21 and 45, who were reportedly engaged in a fight that led them onto the main road, where they were hit by a bus operated by a 30-year-old driver.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana stated that the 21-year-old was declared dead at Vunidawa Hospital, while the 45-year-old succumbed to injuries the following morning after being transferred to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. Divuana highlighted that if the victims had not been under the influence of alcohol, the tragic accident could likely have been avoided.
The SSP stressed that excessive alcohol consumption poses a significant threat to all road users, including drivers, passengers, riders, and pedestrians. He urged the public to act responsibly and consider the consequences of their actions.
Divuana expressed condolences to the families mourning their loss so close to the holiday season, reminding the community of the dangers associated with alcohol, which can impair judgment and slow reflexes, increasing risks on the road.
Despite this sorrowful incident, the national road death toll stands at 58, a reduction from 74 for the same period the previous year. This statistic highlights ongoing efforts in road safety campaigns and the importance of continued vigilance around alcohol consumption and its impact on road safety.
In light of this, it is crucial for individuals and families to reflect on their choices and prioritize safety, especially during festive seasons, when gatherings often involve alcohol. Let this serve as a poignant reminder for everyone to take personal responsibility for their well-being and that of others on the road.
