A two-storey residential building on Johnson Street in Toorak was completely destroyed by a fire on Tuesday evening, with damages estimated at $150,000. The incident drew the attention of the National Fire Authority, which responded promptly around 6:10 pm by dispatching multiple fire crews to combat the inferno that had already engulfed the house.
Firefighters collaborated closely with Energy Fiji Limited and the Water Authority of Fiji to safely isolate the electricity supply and enhance water pressure for firefighting efforts. Their coordinated actions proved effective, as they brought the fire under control by 7:06 pm, successfully preventing it from spreading to adjacent properties.
Joel Israel, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the NFA, noted that the older timber-framed structure exacerbated the fire’s intensity, making suppression efforts particularly difficult. The property, owned by 48-year-old Vani Tinai, was declared a total loss, with 100 percent damage reported. Preliminary investigations suggest that the source of the fire may have been a faulty cooking appliance. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported during the incident.
This event underscores the importance of fire safety and the swift response of emergency services in controlling fires and protecting nearby homes. Such resilience from the community and emergency responders helps foster a sense of security among residents in the region.
