Suva Nightclub Assault: Cop and 22-Year-Old Remanded on Grievous Harm Charge

Suva Nightclub Assault: Cop and 22-Year-Old Remanded on Grievous Harm Charge

A police officer and a 22-year-old man have been remanded in custody by the Suva Magistrate Court following an alleged assault outside a nightclub in Suva earlier this week. Special Constable Joni Saro Ratumaikorolevu and Sepo Kelepi Toduadua face a charge of acting with intent to cause grievous harm, as defined by section 255(a) of the Crimes Act of 2009.

During a court appearance before Magistrate Aisea Parker, it was revealed that the pair allegedly assaulted the victim by kicking him in the head and chest on Tuesday night. The victim is currently admitted to CWM Hospital in critical condition, highlighting the severity of the incident.

Court proceedings disclosed that there is no prior relationship between the defendants and the victim. Due to the serious nature of the charge, the case has been escalated to the High Court, where the accused are required to submit a formal bail application.

The case has been adjourned, with the next court date set for the 22nd of this month. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about public safety and the responsibilities of law enforcement.
