April 27, 2026: Fiji Braces for Heavy Showers, Isolated Thunderstorms and Flash Flood Risk as Trough Lingers West

Fiji rainy street scene with pedestrians using umbrellas during a heavy downpour.

A slow-moving trough of low pressure located to the west of the Fiji group, together with a moist east to northeast wind flow, is producing widespread cloud and showers across the islands. Expect cloudy periods and brief showers in many places, with isolated thunderstorms capable of heavy falls in exposed areas. Localised heavy rain may lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone locations, so take usual precautions if you live in those areas.

The wettest conditions are most likely over Suva/Nausori–Tailevu, Serua/Namosi/Naitasiri/Ra, Cakaudrove and eastern Macuata provinces, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, where cloudy periods with brief showers and isolated heavy thunderstorms are expected. Elsewhere across the group conditions will generally be partly cloudy with isolated afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms, with heavy falls possible in some of those storms.

Winds are moderate from the east to northeast and are expected to turn southeast later today. Seas are moderate at present. Looking ahead to Wednesday, the moist flow continues: cloudy periods with brief showers are forecast again for the provinces and island groups noted above, with isolated heavy falls most likely in the afternoon or evening. Elsewhere conditions will be largely fine apart from isolated afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms. Winds will ease or strengthen to moderate to fresh from the east to southeast, and seas may increase to moderate to rough in places.

Local forecasts: Navua, Suva and Nausori should see cloudy periods with brief showers and isolated heavy falls, especially in the afternoon and evening (overnight lows around 23°C, daytime highs about 31°C). Natadradave and Korovou have a similar outlook and temperatures. The Yasawa and Mamanuca group, Sigatoka and the Coral Coast, and Nadi/Lautoka/Ba are expected to be partly cloudy with isolated afternoon or evening showers and the risk of isolated heavy thunderstorms (Nadi/Lautoka/Ba highs up to about 32°C on Wednesday). Tavua/Rakiraki, Savusavu, Nabouwalu, Taveuni, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups and Kadavu are forecast to have cloudy periods with brief showers and isolated heavy falls, with typical overnight lows near 23°C and daytime maxima near 31°C. Labasa is mainly partly cloudy with isolated showers and thunderstorms; overnight lows near 23°C and daytime highs up to about 33°C in the short term.

Rotuma remains under an easterly wind flow with cloudy periods and some showers. Winds and seas are moderate there, with temperatures around 23°C to 31°C; the outlook for Wednesday is occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with slightly higher temperatures around 24°C to 32°C.
