The second Grand Prix hosted by Fiji Swimming was marked by an energetic display of talent and competition yesterday at the Damodar Aquatic Centre in Suva. Attracting a total of 170 swimmers from various age groups and clubs, the event provided a platform for athletes aiming to secure their places for the Oceania Swimming Championships scheduled for May this year.
Fiji Swimming’s vice president, Errol Taylor, highlighted the significance of this competition as a qualifying event, alongside the upcoming open nationals that will conclude the selection period for the Oceania meet. This Grand Prix also served as a venue for swimmers on the long list for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland to undergo necessary medical screening.
Notably, the turnout at this Grand Prix surpassed that of the first one held on January 31, showcasing increased enthusiasm among swimmers and officials as the Commonwealth Games approach. One of the highlights was the participation of the Pukekohe Swimming Club from Auckland, New Zealand, which sent five swimmers to compete. Their coach, Sheldon Kemp, expressed that this experience would provide valuable exposure to their athletes in a challenging outdoor and humid environment like Fiji.
This event not only strengthens local swimming competitions but also enhances regional collaboration and development in the sport, as swimmers prepare for significant international events.
