Seven sailors from the Republic of Fiji Navy have been suspended without pay following an incident involving the new vessel, RFNS Timo, which occurred on December 19. This information was disclosed by Commodore Humphrey Tawake, as investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
The RFNS Timo, a recent acquisition gifted by the Australian government to replace the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, sustained minor damages to its stern during dock operations at the Walu Bay Navy Pier. The incident reportedly arose from a combination of strong winds and limited docking space, exacerbated by the presence of commercial vessels in the area. Additionally, there are allegations that some sailors may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time.
Commodore Tawake emphasized that the disciplinary actions taken against those involved are part of the standard process while investigations continue. He reassured that these individuals remain members of the Navy but are experiencing suspension until the inquiries conclude.
As the Navy moves forward, Commodore Tawake also mentioned plans to dispose of the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, which had run aground in June, and indicated that the process for a court martial would commence this month.
This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced during naval operations and the importance of maintaining discipline among the crew to ensure safety at sea. The Navy’s commitment to addressing these issues reflects a dedication to accountability and improvement in their operations. Positive steps will continue as investigations wrap up, aiming for enhanced training and protocols to prevent future incidents.
