Strike Countdown: Aspen Hospitals Face Worker Walkout

A strike is scheduled to take place at Aspen Lautoka and Ba hospitals at 7 a.m. on February 6, 2025. The Construction Energy and Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF) announced this decision amid ongoing disputes over wages and working conditions that have remained unresolved since 2017.

CETWUF National Secretary John Paul held a meeting with union members outside the Ba Hospital, as union representatives were barred from entering the facility. Approximately 200 employees, including chefs, ward assistants, pharmacists, maintenance staff, ambulance drivers, security personnel, and administrative employees, are poised to stop work if their grievances are not addressed by the strike date.

The union’s frustration stems from prolonged negotiations that have stalled, particularly regarding salary adjustments that have not kept pace with rising living costs. Previous discussions have highlighted the workers’ urgent need for increased wages and better working conditions in light of inflation affecting their livelihoods.

John Paul emphasized that the workers have shown remarkable patience, but the lack of progress has been a significant cause for concern. The union is advocating for government intervention to facilitate constructive dialogue with Aspen Medical, the hospital operator, ensuring their demands are taken seriously.

The potential strike symbolizes a critical moment in labor relations within Fiji’s healthcare sector. While it has the potential to disrupt hospital operations, there is hope that this action will lead to essential discussions promoting fair compensation and improved conditions for healthcare workers, ultimately benefiting the patients they serve.

In summary, the looming strike reflects broader labor rights challenges within the healthcare sector of Fiji, underscoring the urgent need for negotiations that prioritize not only the welfare of the workers but also the provisions of care for the community. Through collaborative efforts, there remains optimism that a productive resolution can be achieved, thereby enhancing the quality of healthcare services while honoring the significant contributions of these essential workers.
