May 4, 2026: Fiji Under Strong Wind Warning Across Southern Lau, Yasawa, Lomaiviti, Kadavu and Nearby Islands with Winds Up to 55 km/h and Rough Seas

Stormy weather over a tropical beach with palm trees and crashing waves.

A slow‑moving trough over the northern and eastern islands is keeping an active weather pattern across much of Fiji, while a moderate to strong east to southeast wind flow prevails across the group. A Strong Wind Warning remains in force for the Southern Lau group, Yasayasa Moala, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Yasawa, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, the southern and eastern half of Viti Levu (from Sigatoka coral coast through Suva up to Rakiraki), southern Bua, eastern Macuata, and Cakaudrove including Taveuni and nearby smaller islands. A Heavy Rain Alert that had been in force for parts of Viti Levu, Cakaudrove, southern Bua, Taveuni, Lomaiviti and Kadavu has been cancelled.

Across the warned areas — Yasawa; eastern and southern Viti Levu (Sigatoka through Suva up to Rakiraki); Lau and Lomaiviti; Kadavu and nearby smaller islands; southern Bua; and Cakaudrove including Taveuni — expect east to southeast winds of 35 to 45 km/h, increasing up to 55 km/h at times. Winds are forecast to ease to moderate to fresh southeast tomorrow. Seas will be rough to very rough in these zones; elsewhere, moderate to fresh southeast winds and moderate to rough seas are expected.

Rain and thunderstorms will be most likely over the Lau group, eastern Macuata and Cakaudrove provinces, with occasional rain and a few thunderstorms and isolated heavy falls possible. Cloudy periods with some showers are forecast for Suva‑Nausori‑Korovou‑Rakiraki areas, Serua‑Namosi‑Naitasiri‑Ra‑Tailevu and southern Bua province, and Kadavu and nearby smaller islands. Most other areas will be fine apart from isolated afternoon or evening showers and possible thunderstorms. Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding in low‑lying and flood‑prone locations.

In the central urban corridor (Navua / Suva / Nausori) east to southeast winds of 35 to 45 km/h, gusting to 55 km/h at times, are expected, easing to moderate to fresh tomorrow. Cloudy periods with some showers and isolated afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls are likely; today’s maximum around 29°C and a similar maximum tomorrow with a minimum near 21°C. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba should remain mainly fine apart from isolated afternoon or evening showers and possible thunderstorms, with highs near 31°C. Taveuni, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups and Kadavu can expect occasional rain with localized heavy falls that could cause flash flooding of low‑lying areas.

Rotuma remains under the influence of the trough with occasional showers, heavy at times, and isolated thunderstorms in moderate southeasterly winds and moderate to rough seas. Looking ahead to Wednesday, cloudy periods with some showers are expected to continue across Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri‑Ra, Cakaudrove, southern Bua, Taveuni and nearby islands, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu. Mariners and coastal communities should exercise caution in the warned areas because of strong winds and rough seas, and residents in low‑lying or flood‑prone locations should be alert to the risk of localized flash flooding.
