For the first time, Vanua Levu is preparing to implement speed cameras on its roadways as part of an initiative led by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to bolster road safety in Fiji’s Northern Division. This strategic move will see the installation of both static and portable speed cameras, aiming to enhance enforcement and encourage safe driving behaviors among motorists.
LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted the current lack of speed cameras in the Northern Division and expressed optimism that the introduction of these devices will lead to a marked improvement in road safety. He indicated that the cameras will be crucial in reducing reckless driving, noting that since January 28, over 7,800 speeding violations have already been recorded on Viti Levu with existing equipment.
Under the upcoming capital budget for the financial year 2025–2026, the LTA proposes to allocate additional resources for portable cameras, which will be strategically placed in known problem areas to monitor speeding after drivers pass fixed camera locations. Currently, the LTA operates 31 camera poles, but only 14 functioning cameras are actively in rotation.
This initiative aligns with previous efforts by the LTA to combat traffic violations and improve road safety throughout the country, especially as speeding has been a leading cause of road accidents. The authorities are committed to ensuring that these new measures are not just about enforcement but also about creating a culture of accountability and responsible driving within the community.
Additionally, similar initiatives previously outlined by the LTA included plans for public education campaigns designed to raise awareness about safe driving practices. The focus is on cultivating a vigilant driving environment that ultimately aims to reduce accidents and save lives.
With these proactive steps, there is hopeful potential for a significant enhancement in road safety, fostering a culture where all road users can feel secure and responsible. This reflects a shared commitment to making Fiji’s roads safer for everyone.
