Three portable speed cameras will soon be deployed to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) personnel in Vanua Levu, aimed at curbing speeding issues on the roads. Faiyum Ali, the chief operating officer of the LTA, stated that speeding is a leading contributor to road accidents in Fiji, emphasizing the importance of these new measures.
To strengthen road safety, the Authority has previously installed fixed speed and red-light cameras in major areas like Suva and the Western Division. Mr. Ali assured that the Northern Division would also benefit from enhanced enforcement, marking this proactive approach as an essential move to tackle the persistent issue of speeding.
The recent contract signed by the LTA includes a total of twelve portable speed cameras, with three designated for Vanua Levu. These cameras will operate continuously, day and night, at various checkpoints, providing an automated and transparent monitoring system. Unlike manual radar speed checks, the new technology will ensure that offenses are recorded accurately, and traffic infringement notices will be issued even if the violators are law enforcement officers themselves.
The LTA is optimistic that this initiative will lead to increased compliance among drivers. Complementing this development, the Fiji Roads Authority is considering placing road humps in strategic locations to further encourage safe driving practices.
This effort not only reflects an ongoing response to Fiji’s traffic safety challenges, particularly with speeding being responsible for a significant percentage of road fatalities, but also echoes similar initiatives announced previously by the LTA to enhance road safety across the nation. By employing innovative technology and strategic enforcement measures, there is hope for a notable improvement in road safety and a reduction in accidents, paving the way for a safer driving environment in Fiji.
