John Ah Tong, a councilor from Sigatoka district, has praised the impact of the new Buy Back Centre, which was launched in June by the Sigatoka Town Council in collaboration with the Coca-Cola Company. He highlighted that the initiative has effectively encouraged local residents to collect and recycle plastic bottles, promoting a greater awareness of environmental responsibility within the community.

“This center has created a positive change in Sigatoka Town, as people are now more conscientious about where they dispose of their recyclable materials,” Mr. Ah Tong remarked. He called for residents to take pride in their environment, underlining the importance of proper waste disposal along with ongoing monitoring to ensure sustainability in local projects.

Special administrator of the council, Adish Naidu, echoed these sentiments, stating that the centre has been well-received by the community. “Residents are bringing in empty plastic bottles and getting paid in return, which is addressing our litter challenges effectively,” he noted.

This innovative approach is part of a broader trend seen across the Pacific region, where similar recycling programs are being implemented. For instance, the Tonga Recycling Association has launched a program facilitating the recycling of PET bottles and cans to promote environmental stewardship. This aligns with efforts in Fiji, where partnerships with organizations like the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) are working towards enhancing waste management practices.

Overall, the initiatives in both Sigatoka and Tongatapu reflect a hopeful movement toward a more sustainable future, showcasing how collaborative efforts can positively influence environmental habits in communities. As awareness continues to grow, these programs are paving the way for responsible waste management and fostering pride in local environments.
