The Central Division Emergency Operations Center is now fully operational as teams monitor heavy rainfall affecting various regions of the country, particularly in the Western Division. Minister for Rural, Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, announced during a press conference that the Fiji Police Force remains on standby to assist with potential evacuations from flood-risk areas.
Fijians needing evacuation assistance are encouraged to contact the authorities by dialing 917. Backed by data from the recent hours, significant flash flooding has been reported in areas including Sigatoka Town and Lawaqa Road, exacerbated by high-intensity rainfall coinciding with high tide.
Minister Ditoka emphasized the importance of public safety during this adverse weather, advising people to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve. The National Emergency Operations Center is collaborating closely with local authorities, including the Sigatoka Town Council and the Fiji Police, to oversee movements within affected areas and ensure community safety.
He described a recent evacuation of a family of 10 from the Calia Settlement in Serua, who were temporarily housed at the LDS Church as a precaution. Fortunately, they have since returned home safely. Ditoka reiterated the dangers of flooding and advised parents to keep children indoors and avoid crossing flooded pathways.
Traffic disruptions are expected as the weather conditions persist, with motorists urged to exercise caution and refrain from driving over flooded roads. A flash flood alert covers low-lying areas and small streams across regions such as Vanua Levu, Lami, Suva, Nausori, Tailevu, and Naitasiri, while heavy rain warnings are in effect for the Northern Division and other areas.
While the current weather conditions appear severe, officials project that improvements could begin later today as the trough of low pressure moves away from the Fiji group. Keeping safety as a top priority, the community is reminded that flood alerts remain active, underscoring the need for constant vigilance.
This situation serves as a reminder of the resilience of the Fijian community and the importance of support services during natural disasters. The collective efforts from authorities and local organizations highlight the commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents during such challenging times.
