Waisale Serevi, the celebrated maestro of sevens rugby, is set to take the reins as head coach for the Fijian Drua 7s team at the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s this week in Sigatoka. Known as a World Rugby Hall of Famer, Serevi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to coach a Fijian team after 16 years, stating that it is both an honor and privilege for him to return to his roots.

Serevi will lead the team with the support of Sam Speight, the Strength and Conditioning Coach from Swire Shipping Fijian Drua. Reflecting on the upcoming tournament, the Drua’s head coach Glen Jackson emphasized the excitement surrounding the Coral Coast 7s. He described the event as a wonderful tournament, presenting a valuable opportunity for a team primarily focused on 15s rugby to test their skills against some of the best 7s players in the nation.

The Fijian Drua will compete against 16 teams during the three-day event from January 16 to 18 at Lawaqa Park. The tournament is highly celebrated, known for hosting top local and international teams, and has previously featured rugby legends such as Serevi himself, the late Jonah Lomu, and others honored in Sigatoka’s “Rugby Town Walk of Fame.” Jay Whyte, chairman of the organizing committee, highlighted the immense popularity of the Drua, noting that a staggering 55% of the Fijian population tune in to watch their games, which showcases the team’s strong national support.

This moment not only marks an exciting chapter for the Drua but also ignites hope for Fijian rugby’s future, with Serevi’s vast experience and connection to the game serving as an inspiring force for both players and fans alike. As the Drua prepares for battle on the field, the community looks forward to witnessing the exceptional talent and camaraderie that make Fijian rugby so special.
