The recent felling of longstanding trees on Savusavu’s main street has raised concerns among local residents and business owners. Cakaudrove Provincial Holdings Limited has stated that the tree removal was conducted in accordance with approved development plans. Chairperson Tevita Gonelevu urged the community to express their grievances directly to the Savusavu Town Council rather than resorting to social media channels.
Gonelevu expressed appreciation for the community’s concerns but emphasized the importance of following official procedures when it comes to approvals. “The process of approval has gone through the Savusavu Town Council and the Ministry of Environment regarding the planned development for the land,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo affirmed the rights of landowners to make development decisions, provided all necessary permits and approvals are in place. The cleared land, owned by Cakaudrove Provincial Holdings, is intended for upcoming infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the area.
This situation mirrors previous discussions about community concerns regarding development projects in the region, emphasizing the necessity for ongoing communication between developers, government entities, and local communities. Past concerns have focused on the need for inclusive dialogue to prevent conflicts and ensure the interests of Indigenous landowners are considered in developmental plans.
The commitment to development in Savusavu reflects positive prospects for the community, with anticipated infrastructure projects expected to invigorate the local economy, create job opportunities, and improve overall living conditions in the area. Continued engagement and dialogue can pave the way for a balanced approach to development that takes into account both progress and community sentiment.
