Seven athletes from Athletics Samoa are participating in the three-day Fiji Secondary School Fiji Finals, a significant national championship event. Head coach Ah Chong Sam Chong expressed gratitude for their involvement, highlighting that this marks the first experience in the Fiji finals for all seven athletes—three competing in field events and four in track events.
Chong emphasized the importance of personal enjoyment and growth, stating, “I do not expect anything else. All I say to them is to have fun, make sure to get personal bests, and winning a medal is a bonus.” This perspective aligns with the broader sentiments shared by coaches and team managers from other schools, who emphasize the value of supporting young athletes as they strive to achieve their personal best while celebrating their journey.
In addition to the excitement of competition, many of the athletes self-funded their trips to Fiji. The fundraising efforts facilitated their accommodations and uniforms, underscoring the community spirit prevalent in sports. Chong expressed heartfelt thanks to the Coca Cola Games organizers and the Fiji Athletics Association, without whose support, they would not be able to compete.
This year’s Fiji Finals has seen a surge in enthusiasm and participation, with over 1,000 athletes anticipated to showcase their talents across various schools. Similar to the experiences of other teams, including those from Adi Maopa Secondary School and Saint Johns College, there’s a strong sense of unity and resilience among competitors striving for excellence.
Amidst the competitive atmosphere, the focus on personal achievements rather than just winning stands out as a hopeful attribute of youth athletics in Fiji. The event is not merely a contest of skill but a celebration of community, perseverance, and the undying spirit of young athletes striving for greatness.
