Mohamed Salah is set to temporarily step away from the pressures at Liverpool as he joins Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations. This announcement comes on the heels of a public fallout with Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, that stirred media attention after Salah expressed feeling like a scapegoat for the team’s dwindling performance.
Egypt’s head coach, Hossam Hassan, confirmed Salah’s inclusion in the national squad as he revealed a 28-man roster for the upcoming tournament starting December 21. Consequently, Salah will miss at least two Premier League fixtures with Liverpool as he prepares for international duty.
The Liverpool star’s recent experiences in the league include being an unused substitute during the recent draw with Leeds United and not participating in a previous match against West Ham United. He was also absent from the squad for Liverpool’s Champions League victory against Inter Milan, raising concerns about his standing within the club.
Salah, however, will play in Liverpool’s match against Brighton & Hove Albion prior to his departure, as FIFA regulations allow players to join their national teams only a week before the tournament begins. During Egypt’s group stage, they will compete against Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Angola.
Joining Salah in the national squad is Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush and former Aston Villa player Mahmoud Trezeguet, along with several talents from top Egyptian clubs like Al-Ahly and Zamalek.
The seven-time champions will kick off their campaign against Zimbabwe on December 22, returning to face South Africa on December 26, and finishing group play against Angola on December 29. With a strong squad assembled, Egypt will be looking to claim another title in this prestigious African tournament.
