Calls for better infrastructure in rural areas are mounting, particularly in Waibasaga village, located in the highlands of Naitasiri. The urgent need for a bridge over the perilous Wainimala River has become paramount, as villagers face life-threatening risks during crossings. Tragically, a recent incident on April 1 resulted in the drowning of a 27-year-old man, highlighting the critical situation that local residents endure daily.
Waisake Vualiku, the chairman of the village development committee, emphasized that their only access to Waibasaga is by crossing this treacherous river and lamented the lack of government action over the years, stating, “We’ve been asking for a bridge for many years, through many governments, but nothing has happened.”
The vulnerability of women and children is especially concerning. More than 100 students attending Muaira District School across the river must traverse the currents using floating tubes or are carried across, a situation that becomes increasingly dangerous during heavy rain.
In light of recent events, the villagers have begun their fundraising efforts to construct a bridge, demonstrating a strong sense of community determination. Vualiku expressed the village’s commitment to tackling this issue themselves: “We will help ourselves and do it.”
This situation reflects a broader challenge faced by rural communities across the region. For instance, families in Saliadrau Village have also struggled with unsafe river crossings. With their ongoing appeals for a bridge, local families contend with the risk of their children missing school due to extreme weather conditions. Similarly, residents in Nananu and Naseyani villages have faced life-threatening situations due to unsafe river crossings, though recent completion of the Naseyani Bridge has brought hope for better safety and access.
Commenting on the situation, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Sakiasi Ditoka has acknowledged the villagers’ concerns and is set to meet with development partners to discuss potential solutions.
The rising efforts among these communities to improve their infrastructure illustrate a remarkable spirit of resilience and cooperation. With continued advocacy and the support of local authorities, the hope remains that safer crossings can be established, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for these vulnerable populations.
