Rupeni Kabu, a 27-year-old rugby player, is setting his sights on being selected for another HSBC SVNS series leg in 2025. He aspires to earn a spot in head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-member team during one of the tournaments next year. Kabu’s last appearance on the world tournament stage was at the 2023 Dubai Sevens, which marked his series debut following his participation in the Oceania and Pacific Games earlier that year.
Describing being included in the extended squad as a significant achievement, Kabu emphasizes the dedication and effort it takes to reach that level. He reflects on the dreams of young rugby players to compete alongside the nation’s best and hopes for another opportunity in the series.
In addition to his immediate goal, Kabu is aiming to secure an overseas rugby contract. His journey began with the Natakali Sharks in Naiborebore, Tailevu, and progressed through to Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship and the Police Blues sevens team.
Kabu expresses gratitude towards veteran players like Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu for their mentorship, as well as a deep admiration for assistant coach Viliame Satala during his formative years. He acknowledges the discipline instilled in him through their guidance and aims to inspire the next generation of players.
The national sevens squad has resumed its Daily Training Exercise (DTE) at the start of the year and will begin a training camp next week. Kolinisau plans to field a team at the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast Sevens from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, before selecting the squad for the upcoming Perth Sevens scheduled for January 24-26.
In a hopeful note, Kabu’s story reflects the determination and resilience of young athletes pursuing their dreams, showcasing the importance of mentorship and hard work in achieving success. As the national team gears up for the upcoming tournaments, there’s excitement surrounding the potential breakthroughs and achievements on the horizon for Kabu and his teammates.
