Former rugby captain Varasiko Roemoni, a Year 10 student from Narukunibua Village in Namosi, is committed to his rugby league journey with the USP Raiders under-16 team, traveling weekly for matches. His dedication was evident during a recent challenging game against the Nadera Panthers, where the Raiders fought to a 16-16 draw at Bidesi Park in Suva.
Roemoni expressed his excitement about playing for the Raiders, stating that it’s his second year with the team. He’s not alone in this commitment; he trains alongside two other teammates from Namosi, making the journey together each Saturday. Roemoni began his rugby league career at just 15, leading the Namosi Secondary School under-17 team, which showcases his talent and potential in the sport.
As the season progresses, Roemoni remains optimistic about the Raiders’ chances of winning the under-16 grade this year, reflecting a positive spirit and ambition within the team. Their match experience, particularly against the strong Nadera Panthers, is vital for their development and strategy moving forward.
The competitiveness of the league is further highlighted by other results, with the Nadera Panthers emerging victorious in the under-12 and under-14 grades, indicating a strong performance across those age levels.
Roemoni and his teammates’ dedication to training and their commitment to representing their village goes beyond just the sport; it encourages community bonding and youth engagement in rugby. As the Raiders strive for success this season, their journey not only inspires fellow athletes in Namosi but also emphasizes the values of dedication and resilience in sports.
