The Land Transport Authority (LTA) reported significant disciplinary actions against drivers as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance road safety. From 2023 to 2024, over 5,000 license holders faced disciplinary measures, including 176 drivers who were suspended. Assistant Minister for Transport Naisa Tuinaceva emphasized that these actions are crucial for improving road safety, enforcing regulations, and ensuring accountability among drivers.
Tuinaceva noted that speeding and drunk driving remain the primary causes of traffic accidents, with serious crashes rising from 243 in 2023 to 263 in 2024. In light of these concerns, the government plans to increase fines as a deterrent against violations, reaffirming their goal to cut down accidents by 50%.
“We have portable speed cameras already in operation and 11 more expected to be deployed in the next three months, representing an investment of $0.8 million. Together with our 14 static cameras and 31 rotating camera sites, we’re committed to bolstering our enforcement efforts,” stated Tuinaceva.
Despite an increase in registered vehicles, from 148,000 in 2023 to 154,000 in 2024, there has been a significant improvement in road safety outcomes. The number of fatalities decreased dramatically, with only two deaths reported in the last two months compared to ten during the same period the previous year, indicating an 80% improvement. This positive trend is attributed to the enhanced enforcement, along with proactive road safety education and awareness campaigns conducted by the LTA and the Fiji Police Force.
These measures are part of a broader strategy to foster a safer driving culture in Fiji. Continued emphasis on education and the enforcement of road regulations will be essential to maintaining this momentum towards improved road safety.
In summary, the concerted efforts of the government and LTA present a hopeful outlook for reduced traffic incidents and increased safety for all road users. The communities can expect ongoing initiatives aimed at further enhancing awareness and responsibility on the roads.
