Tony Chan, a 24-year-old medical student, expressed his belief in the importance of support and encouragement from others as a key factor in achieving success. During the 2024 University of Fiji Graduation ceremony at the Saweni Campus in Lautoka, Chan was honored with five prestigious awards, including being named the UniFiji Outstanding Student in Internal Medicine, Outstanding Student in Paediatrics, and Outstanding Student in Community Health and Family Service.

Additionally, Chan received one of the two gold medal awards for the year and the Vice-Chancellor Award. Reflecting on his journey, he mentioned the struggle of being away from his family during the COVID-19 pandemic as a significant challenge.

“I’m grateful to my family, schoolmates, and lecturers, particularly Dr. Ifereimi Waqainabete. Their encouragement played a crucial role in my achievements. My schoolmates have supported me throughout these past six years,” he stated. Chan admitted he was taken aback by receiving multiple awards, attributing this recognition to his determination, which his educators noticed.

He acknowledged that the achievements symbolized by his medals and certificates have opened numerous opportunities in the medical field.

This story serves as an inspiring reminder of how commitment and a support network can lead to significant accomplishments. Chan’s success not only highlights personal determination but also the collective effort from family, friends, and mentors, showcasing the power of community in achieving one’s goals.
