Mitieli Navuasese of the Haider Fighting Club delivered an impressive performance at the International Tri-Nations amateur boxing competition, clinching gold in the sub-junior under-15 58-60kg category by overpowering Josh Clarke from Australia. The bout took place at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva on Saturday, where Navuasese demonstrated remarkable agility and speed in the ring, responding effectively to Clarke’s well-placed punches.

After the match, a visibly joyful Navuasese shared his thoughts on his victory. “I’m really happy, and it’s the fruits of the training I have been working on for quite some time, and it got me the gold medal,” he said, reflecting on the dedication that led to his success. He also acknowledged Clarke’s strength as a worthy opponent, stating, “Yes, he was a very strong competitor too, but I’m happy that I won it.”

Navuasese’s preparation for this significant competition was rigorous, focusing on maintaining his weight and adhering to a strict diet. “The only challenge was losing weight and sticking to a diet, eating smaller meals,” he mentioned, showcasing his commitment to the sport. Beginning his boxing journey in primary school at St Agnes Primary School in Nabua, Suva, Navuasese noted considerable personal growth in his boxing skills since those early days.

His success adds to the encouraging narrative surrounding young Fijian boxers, who are making significant strides on the international stage. The competition featured several young talents, showcasing the vibrant boxing culture in Fiji and reinforcing the potential for future stars to emerge.

This victory is not just a personal achievement for Navuasese but also a symbol of the hope and ambition present in the Fijian boxing community. As he continues to train and ascend in his sport, his accomplishment serves as motivation for aspiring athletes throughout the region.
