Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized the need to end reliance on handouts and focus on sustainable poverty alleviation in his New Year’s Day address. He highlighted that lifting the most marginalized communities out of poverty would be a priority for the Coalition Government moving into 2025.
Rabuka’s vision involves implementing a targeted approach to poverty alleviation, emphasizing a gradual process that operates one village at a time. He believes that with innovation and investment, everyone in the community should be able to achieve a life of dignity, whether through employment or self-employment.
The Prime Minister advocated for a collaborative effort across the nation, with a particular focus on the essential role of the private sector in facilitating these initiatives. The Coalition Government has been actively working on various programs over the past two years to ensure the realization of fundamental rights, such as access to housing, sanitation, and essential services, which contributes to improving the living standards of all Fijians.
In terms of infrastructure, initiatives aimed at enhancing water supply are underway, including the Rural Water and Sanitation Policy that aims to provide clean drinking water and hygiene facilities in rural communities. Funding from the Water Authority of Fiji, amounting to approximately $259 million, supports projects like rainwater harvesting to benefit remote households.
The Prime Minister also assured the continued support of existing social protection programs designed to aid families, individuals with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups, affirming a balanced approach to welfare alongside efforts to foster self-sufficiency and resilience.
This comprehensive strategy signals a hopeful outlook for Fiji as it strives to break the cycle of poverty while fostering a culture of innovation and self-reliance among its citizens. By investing in the right areas and encouraging everyone’s participation, the government aims to build a more sustainable and dignified future for all Fijians.
