Ministers Unite: The Urgent Plea for Family Time to Combat Youth Drug Issues

Government ministers have united in a strong appeal for parents to dedicate more time to their children as part of efforts to confront the escalating drug-related issues in society. In a heartfelt video message directed towards children, Justice Minister Siromi Turaga emphasized the importance of making informed decisions, highlighting that each choice carries potential long-term effects on various aspects of life, including health and education.

Turaga advised youngsters to stop and consider the consequences of their actions before deciding, and to seek guidance from trusted adults, family members, or community figures. Echoing this message, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua urged parents and guardians to prioritize their children’s well-being. She suggested that this might require reducing time spent on other obligations such as social engagements and digital distractions in favor of nurturing relationships with their children.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru encouraged families to value their shared moments, advocating for open conversations and quality time together. He emphasized the necessity of active listening and engagement, which can significantly enhance familial bonds. Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo joined in this chorus, calling for a shift in focus towards family life as an essential component of raising healthy children.

Further reinforcing this message, Great Council of Chiefs chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula highlighted the collective responsibility of the community to foster a safe and supportive environment for children. He pointed out that in a small nation like Fiji, collaboration is key to effectively tackle the challenges posed by drug abuse and other detrimental behaviors.

This initiative not only aims to address pressing societal issues but also hopes to strengthen family ties, encouraging a nurturing environment for the younger generation. By fostering communication, involvement, and love, parents can play a pivotal role in shaping a brighter future for their children and the entire community.

In summary, government officials are advocating for increased parental engagement in children’s lives to combat the rise of drug abuse and promote overall well-being, sending a hopeful message that together, society can effect positive change.
