Family Harmony: Meet C5, Fiji’s Next Reggae Sensation

For many years, Fiji’s music scene has showcased remarkable talent from individuals across various backgrounds, offering audiences an unforgettable blend of powerful music, shared experiences, and joy. This was profoundly felt at the recent 2024 Reggae Music Festival held at Bidesi Ground, where the energetic group known as Chapter 5 (C5) graced the stage with their reggae rhythms.

C5, composed of cousins and siblings who are the fifth generation of a musical family from Wallis and Futuna, includes Nicholas Smith on drums, Michael Yalani as the lead guitarist, Niko Yalani on rhythm guitar, Filipe Yalani on bass, and vocalists Maya and Niu Smith. Their family legacy in music has continuously inspired them, leading to the formation of the band.

Drummer Nicholas shared insights into their familial roots, noting the strong musical heritage that runs in their blood. Each generation of their family has contributed to Fiji’s music scene, with their late uncle Arthur Philitoga being a prominent figure known for his candid opinions on the industry. Philitoga, who established the band Kulture in 1993, was admired for his ability to recognize and nurture talent, a trait that has now been passed down to his younger relatives.

The members of C5 acknowledge the challenge of upholding the legacy set by their uncle, but they view it as inspiration rather than pressure. Since their inception, the band has been invited to perform regularly, taking joy in their musical journey despite the challenges.

With an average age of 25, these young musicians find strength in their close-knit relationships, allowing them to communicate openly and resolve conflicts effectively. They draw inspiration from local artists and their eldest brother Sebastian, who has significantly influenced their musical direction.

C5’s journey began with a grog session that introduced them to their idol, Olsen J Sefo, who helped them secure their first gig. Despite being relatively new to the music scene, C5 has already begun to garner positive feedback from audiences, and their popularity is expected to rise, bolstered by strong support from their parents and peers.

This story highlights the power of music to unite families and communities, as well as the importance of building upon legacies—an inspiring journey that not only enriches the individuals involved but also the wider community in Fiji. With C5 leading the next generation, the future of Fijian music looks bright and promising.
