Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka has refuted media reports claiming that crew members of a foreign airline were detained following incidents of robbery and sexual assault. The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has confirmed that the police are currently investigating these incidents, which occurred in Nadi’s nightclub area in the early hours of Wednesday.
In his statement, Gavoka clarified that there were two distinct incidents affecting two different crew members, one related to theft and the other to an alleged sexual assault. He assured the public that a suspect known to the police for the alleged sexual assault is being questioned as the investigation progresses.
Gavoka expressed his thoughts for the well-being of the affected crew members, stating, “Our thoughts and concerns are with them and for their health and well-being.” He noted that the three crew members are in good health and are being accommodated in a local hotel designated for crew layovers. They are expected to return home before the end of the week, having been advised to remain close to the hotel to assist with police inquiries.
He emphasized the importance of accurate reporting and urged international media to refrain from sensationalizing events without verifying facts. “Regrettably, incidents like this can happen anywhere and Fiji is not immune,” he stated, reminding tourists to exercise caution, particularly in nightlife areas.
Overall, while these incidents are unfortunate, the prompt response and ongoing investigations by local authorities reflect a commitment to ensuring safety and addressing concerns within the tourism sector. It is a reminder for both locals and visitors to remain vigilant while enjoying the vibrant nightlife that many destinations offer.
In summary, accurate news reporting is crucial, especially in sensitive matters, and the authorities in Fiji are taking the necessary steps to investigate and support those affected.
