As the holiday season approaches, families gather to celebrate, share meals, and enjoy each other’s company. However, it is also a time to reflect on the deeper significance of these celebrations, particularly the message of the vulnerable Christ Child.
Reverend James Bhagwan, general secretary of the Pacific Conference of Churches, emphasizes the importance of remembering the vulnerable children within Fiji’s communities during this festive period. He highlights the struggles faced by many children, including those who experience violence, abuse, and neglect, as well as those forced into drug trafficking by family members. Additionally, he points out the challenges facing children who are grappling with academic pressures and those whose families struggle to provide basic needs amidst rising living costs.
Drawing from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, specifically Chapter 9, verse 6, Reverend Bhagwan invokes a powerful message of hope: “For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders, and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” This scripture reinforces the idea that the birth of Christ symbolizes hope and care for all, especially the marginalized.
As families celebrate Christmas, Bhagwan urges them to remember those children whose lives are adversely affected by climate change, political unrest, and other social challenges. He highlights the plight of thousands of women and children in West Papua who face displacement due to military operations, and the intergenerational trauma experienced by children in the Marshall Islands and Kiribati from past nuclear testing.
Reverend Bhagwan reminds us that the true spirit of Christmas calls for love and justice. He encourages families to practice compassion and ensure their children’s safety while reaching out to those in need. His message is about committing to positive actions that promote justice, peace, and harmony in every community and household.
As we embrace the holiday season, it’s a time to foster hope and positivity in our lives and the lives of others. May this Christmas inspire acts of goodwill and a renewed commitment to uplift those who are most vulnerable, leading to a brighter and more compassionate New Year for all.
