A record-breaking 104 teams are set to compete in this year’s Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s tournament, as confirmed by Tournament Coordinator Jeff Tamata. The competition will feature 64 teams in the men’s category, with the remaining teams participating in women’s and youth divisions.
The surge in entries is a testament to the growing interest in grassroots rugby, with six additional teams on standby for potential slots in the tournament. Tamata shared his enthusiasm, stating, “This year is going to be the biggest number of teams ever participating in the Nawaka 7s. We are expecting a very exciting tournament along with some thrilling and quality rugby.”
Scheduled to take place at Prince Charles Park in Nadi next Friday and Saturday, the pool draws for the tournament will be announced this Saturday. The Nawaka 7s continues a nearly four-decade tradition of nurturing grassroots rugby in Fiji, contributing to the development of local talent.
Similar past events such as the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s and the Tabadamu 7s have successfully spotlighted Fijian rugby prowess, allowing many rising players to transition into national representation. The Nawaka 7s is expected to perpetuate this tradition, serving as a platform for local athletes and promoting community engagement through sports initiatives.
As excitement grows for the main event, this year’s Nawaka 7s not only symbolizes a vibrant competition filled with thrilling matches but also reinforces the essential role rugby plays in fostering unity and community spirit throughout Fiji. The event promises to celebrate the rich local talent while uniting the nation in its love for the sport.
