Rabuka’s About-Face: What’s Next for Home Affairs?

Illustration of PM awaits Tikoduadua’s return

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reconsidered his previous statement regarding the appointment of a new Acting Home Affairs and Immigration Minister. Instead, he plans to confer with Pio Tikoduadua, who is expected to return from Australia later this week.

In a media interview, Rabuka mentioned that he has not yet received formal communication from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration about the situation. However, he is aware of the media coverage related to the matter. The Prime Minister acknowledged that the Police are set to investigate the unlawful issuance of passports to members of the Grace Road Group.

Rabuka indicated that he would make a decision only after discussing the situation with Tikoduadua. Last week, it came to light that two senior officials from the Department of Immigration have been placed on leave due to this troubling issue.

This delicate situation highlights the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, which is crucial in maintaining public trust. The forthcoming dialogue between Rabuka and Tikoduadua could pave the way for decisive actions to address the immigration concerns effectively.

In summary, Rabuka’s shift reflects careful consideration as he navigates a complex situation while aiming to uphold the integrity of the immigration system.
