Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his willingness to lead the People’s Alliance party (PAP) in the upcoming 2026 General Election, contingent upon the party’s support for his candidacy. He stated, “I will be available. It depends on the party; if the party wants me to stand, I will.”

Rabuka, a key figure in the formation of PAP in 2021, was instrumental in establishing the party’s identity, which resulted in a narrow victory in the December 2022 general election. Reflecting on his commitment, he noted, “I have done everything for the party for these past three years. But I will not desert the party.”

He also acknowledged that if the party believes that someone else could better serve as leader, he would be willing to step back. Rabuka pointed out the challenges a successor may face, saying, “Considering their party voter pull, it would probably be difficult for someone to take over leadership in the next general election.”

His strong support base is evident, as he received the highest number of votes for PA in 2022, totaling 77,748, while fellow MP Lynda Tabuya received 11,965 votes. However, he noted that the coalition currently faces a shift in public sentiment from enthusiasm to a growing sense of hopelessness.

This pivotal year for Rabuka and his party not only highlights his dedication but also reflects a democratic approach where party members can decide on their future leadership. Such transparency may foster a more robust political environment where citizens feel their voices are heard.

Overall, while challenges lie ahead for Rabuka and the People’s Alliance party, the spirit of cooperation within the party can pave the way for a hopeful re-engagement with voters as they prepare for the upcoming elections.
