Quality Over Quantity: Fiji’s Call for Meaningful Electoral Reform Submissions

The chairperson of the Fiji Electoral Law Reform Commission, Daniel Fatiaki, has emphasized the importance of the quality of public submissions over their quantity during a recent consultation in Nadi. In his address to attendees, Fatiaki stated that whether five or fifty people participate in consultations is less significant than the depth of the discussions and ideas shared. According to him, he values submissions that offer meaningful insights over simply having a high number of participants who may not engage seriously.

Fatiaki underscored the necessity for Fijians to share their thoughts on the electoral system, especially given that the existing framework has not been formed through public consultation but rather imposed over the past decade and a half. He encouraged citizens to participate fully, facilitating discussions that allow for comprehensive feedback on Fiji’s electoral reforms. The commission aims to foster engaging dialogues that solicit genuine opinions rather than superficial contributions, which he believes is critical to ensuring the electoral system truly reflects the will of the people.

This focus on quality submissions comes at a time when previous consultations have faced challenges with low attendance, highlighting a pressing need for increased civic engagement. The broader initiative aims to engage Fijians in shaping the electoral framework, addressing significant issues such as the representation of women in politics, which has seen only five women elected primarily due to the existing electoral system.

Overall, this call for constructive feedback signals a hopeful and optimistic direction for Fiji’s democracy, aiming to revitalize civic engagement and ensure that all voices are heard in the electoral process. By prioritizing meaningful participation, the commission is taking significant steps toward developing an inclusive and responsive political landscape in Fiji.
