PWD Revamped: New Machines Set to Transform Infrastructure

The Public Works Department (PWD) is set to make significant strides following its reinstatement by the government last year. In recent months, the PWD, which was previously closed by the former government, has received a boost in operations with the arrival of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers presented in Suva on Wednesday.

The handover ceremony for these earthmoving machines and trucks took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, involving officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport.

Paula Baleilevuka, the permanent secretary of the ministry, remarked that the timely delivery of this new machinery would enhance infrastructure and capacity development. He noted that these machines are part of a new set of equipment acquired for the ministry.

“These machines will improve road standards and conditions, and facilitate accessibility for economic activities,” Baleilevuka explained. He added that the new equipment would bolster the department’s ability to undertake road construction and maintenance projects, particularly in rural and remote areas.

The ministry’s newly acquired assets include:
– Two large excavators
– Two D6 bulldozers
– Two dumper trucks
– One flat-top truck

The total value of these eight machines is approximately $1,627,104. For the current financial year, the ministry has been allocated $5 million to upgrade and enhance rural roads. Baleilevuka emphasized that the new equipment and vehicles are slated for use in upcoming projects.
