Fiji’s Nadi Airport Soars with Landmark Sustainability Achievement

Fiji’s Nadi International Airport has achieved a milestone by obtaining Level 4 Transformation under the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA), marking it as the first airport in the Blue Pacific region to attain this significant recognition. This accomplishment is a testament to the continuous commitment from the Fiji Airports Board of Directors, Management, staff, and stakeholders towards sustainability in airport operations.

Mesake Nawari, Chief Executive of Fiji Airports, emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating that it reflects their alignment with global climate goals and a commitment to reducing carbon emissions. “This accomplishment underscores our role in the global effort to combat climate change,” Nawari remarked, adding that such recognition alongside larger international airports signifies their dedication to minimizing environmental impacts.

Previously, Fiji Airports had garnered Level 3 “Optimisation” status in ACA in 2020 and continued its efforts to enhance sustainability with various initiatives aimed at reducing emissions. Recent projects, including the procurement of 14 electric vehicles powered by solar energy, underscore this commitment. The electric vehicles support ongoing sustainability efforts by using surplus energy generated from solar systems installed at the airport.

In a concurrent advancement, four domestic terminals across Savusavu, Matei, Rotuma, and the temporary Labasa terminal are now fully solar-powered, a project executed by the Renewable Energy Special Projects team. This shift towards renewable energy not only decreases operational costs but also demonstrates Fiji Airports’ proactive role in responding to the pressing issues of climate change.

The recognition was received last week in New Delhi, India, cementing Fiji’s position as a leader in environmental sustainability within the aviation industry. It also sets a positive precedent for other airports in the region, indicating a strong move towards sustainable practices in aviation.

By integrating innovative solutions and focusing on renewable energy, Fiji’s aviation sector not only addresses local environmental challenges but also contributes to global sustainability goals. This commendable achievement portrays a hopeful outlook for future initiatives aimed at combating climate change through aviation, thereby enhancing Fiji’s role as a model for others in the Blue Pacific region.
