Cure Kids Fiji successfully hosted the Big Drives for Little Lives Fiji Open at the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club on April 12, raising FJD $37,500 to support its child health initiatives. The funds will directly benefit the Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) Programme and the Fiji Oxygen Programme, both of which aim to improve healthcare for children across the nation.
Dr. Jimaima Kailawadoko-Matainacake, Country Manager of Cure Kids Fiji, called the event a resounding success, highlighting how it united the community in making a positive impact on children’s health. She expressed gratitude towards sponsors, participating teams, players, and volunteers for their substantial support, which will enable outreach efforts including screenings and training sessions, particularly in rural areas.
Fiji faces a significant health challenge with one of the highest global rates of Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF) and RHD. Statistics reveal that approximately one child in every classroom is affected, with over 60 children losing their lives each year due to these preventable conditions. There is also an urgent need for improved respiratory care, as severe pneumonia and neonatal illnesses are among the leading causes of mortality in children under five, with over 200 young lives lost annually in Fiji.
Dr. Kailawadoko-Matainacake reaffirmed their commitment to tackling these challenges and enhancing healthcare access for vulnerable children in Fiji. The community’s active engagement in the event reflects a collective determination to foster healthier futures for the nation’s youth.
This initiative not only underscores the importance of community support in addressing health issues but also highlights how collective efforts can lead to significant improvements in child health outcomes. A united approach gives hope for a future where preventable diseases are reduced, and access to healthcare for all children is strengthened.
