Three months following a significant power outage that disrupted an open-body surgery at Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM), Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu has indicated that the hospital’s generator system continues to face reliability issues. The March blackout plunged the operating theatre into darkness and raised serious concerns about the hospital’s backup power systems.
Dr. Lalabalavu explained that the generator is designed to operate automatically; however, it has been failing to do so at critical moments. He stated, “The plan is to make it as automatic as possible. But look, with the current system we have, again, it’s supposed to be automatic.” Currently, when the backup system malfunctions, hospital staff must manually restore power, with some working around the clock to ensure operations can continue.
This situation aligns with previous incidents at CWM, including another power outage during an emergency procedure, which further emphasizes the hospital’s long-standing infrastructure challenges. Chief pediatric surgeon Dr. Josese Turagava has previously voiced concerns over the reliability of hospital power systems, particularly during hurricane seasons when such failures can be catastrophic. Despite a $15 million funding allocation aimed at improving infrastructure over the past two years, reports indicate that necessary repairs are still pending, with several operating theatres in urgent need of attention.
While these ongoing issues paint a troubling picture, there is a hopeful narrative emerging from collective community advocacy for reform and improvement of healthcare services. The Ministry of Health’s commitment to investigate the generator failures and implement necessary upgrades signals potential progress toward a more reliable healthcare system in Fiji. As the dialogue surrounding these challenges continues, the resilience of medical staff and community support are crucial in pushing for essential reforms, fostering optimism for a brighter future in healthcare for all citizens.
