Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has emphasized that the decision to form a new tribunal to investigate claims against Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde, is not within his jurisdiction, but instead belongs to the Judicial Legal Service Commission. This statement was made in light of claims by Pryde regarding the possibility of another tribunal being established to address allegations against him.

Rabuka asserted, “If there’s another tribunal, it will not be my responsibility; it’s outside my area of responsibility,” highlighting the delineation of duties among governmental bodies.

In response to inquiries about the financial implications of tribunals, the Prime Minister acknowledged that while they are an expense associated with government operations, any necessary actions will take place if warranted. He also stressed the importance of protecting classified information, indicating that breaches could result in investigations against individuals who disclose sensitive information.

This discussion comes after a prior tribunal that cleared Pryde of misconduct allegations, resulting in his reinstatement and the restoration of any lost pay and benefits. The Prime Minister’s reaffirmation of commitment to due process reflects a dedication to accountability and transparency within Fiji’s governance framework.

The ongoing dialogue surrounding judicial processes signals a positive trajectory toward enhancing integrity and public trust in legal institutions. The emphasis on clear roles and responsibilities within the judicial system, alongside a commitment to protect sensitive information, indicates a hopeful direction for Fiji’s legal landscape.

In summary, Rabuka’s statements not only clarify the role of different authorities in tribunal decisions but also highlight the nation’s commitment to maintaining a transparent and accountable legal framework, fostering a robust trust in its institutions.
