The population of Kanaky, also known as New Caledonia, has seen a notable decline, dropping to 264,596 as reported in the April Census. This marks a decrease of approximately 11,000 individuals since 2019, when the population was recorded at 271,400.

Jean Philippe Grouthier, the census chef de mission at France’s national statistical institute, pointed out that even with a natural population growth of around 11,000 (the difference between births and deaths), the region has suffered an outflow of about 18,000 residents who have left the territory. These statistics reflect a concerning trend amplified by previous civil unrest, with significant unrest occurring during the May riots in 2014, which resulted in 14 fatalities and inflicted around $2.31 billion in damages.

Airport statistics confirm an increase in the number of residents departing New Caledonia permanently, indicative of its diminishing attractiveness compared to earlier decades. This assessment aligns with Grouthier’s comments, which suggest that New Caledonia may be perceived as less appealing to residents now than it was in the 2000s and 2010s.

Originally planned for 2024, the census had to be postponed due to civil unrest, highlighting the challenges faced in establishing reliable population metrics amidst ongoing instability.

In light of the demographic changes and challenges, the Northern district hospital has also announced a temporary closure of its emergency services due to a critical shortage of medical staff, exacerbated by the unrest. Nevertheless, emergency services in the Koné area will continue to operate, signaling a responsive approach to the healthcare needs of the population.

Despite these challenges, there are discussions surrounding new political agreements and paths toward stabilizing the territory. Recent efforts between New Caledonia’s various political factions indicate a commitment to addressing the social and economic issues that have resulted from such civil disruptions. As stakeholders aim to navigate through these complexities, the emphasis on dialogue may serve as a hopeful indication for the region’s potential recovery and growth into the future.

Overall, while the statistics reveal a stark reality regarding population departures and healthcare challenges, the ongoing dialogues among political leaders provide a semblance of hope. Such discussions could foster unity and collaboration, paving the way for improved conditions and a more stable environment in New Caledonia.
