As the nation comes together to celebrate Christmas, the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) is expressing a desire for a more harmonious and united Fiji, emphasizing that this transformation should start from the heart of every home.

FCOSS executive director Vani Catanasiga characterized this festive season as one filled with hope, family, and new beginnings. She shared that FCOSS views the recent National Dialogue on Pathways to Peace as a valuable gift of hope and a tangible plan for the future of the nation.

“We are reminded that it takes a village to raise a child, a message that resonates deeply as we reflect on our collective responsibilities,” Catanasiga noted. She emphasized the importance of fostering an environment where every family is nurtured, where leaders act with integrity, and where all citizens have the opportunity to prosper.

During the dialogue, participants highlighted that fragile family structures are a significant contributor to societal issues such as youth delinquency, crime, and a decline in social values. Catanasiga pointed out that families, which serve as the first schools for children, are facing unprecedented challenges. These include economic pressures, deteriorating communication, and weakening moral and spiritual foundations.

A growing distrust in both traditional and modern leadership has contributed to community disengagement, raising concerns about the fabric of society. However, Catanasiga calls for this Christmas to mark a commitment to building a Fiji where peace truly begins at home, suggesting that genuine change is possible through strengthened familial and community bonds.

This message of hope embodies the spirit of the season, encouraging all Fijians to work together towards a better and more cohesive future.
