Parliament in Fiji is set to be prorogued from Monday, December 16, 2024, until the commencement of the next session on Monday, February 24, 2025. Prorogation marks the official conclusion of a parliamentary session or year within the four-year parliamentary term. The Speaker of Parliament has officially communicated this prorogation to the President of Fiji.
During this period, all parliamentary activities, including sittings and committee proceedings, will be paused. However, urgent matters may still be addressed at the Speaker’s discretion.
The State Opening of the third parliamentary session will take place on February 24, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., presided over by President Ratu Naiqama Tawakecolati Lalabalavu, accompanied by a military Guard-of-Honour. Notable attendees will include Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo and various judges.
Parliament is scheduled to reconvene on Monday, March 3, 2025, for two weeks of sessions. Throughout the prorogation, operational activities of the parliamentary secretariat will persist unless notified otherwise.
This scheduled prorogation underscores the significance of orderly governmental transitions and provides a structured timeline for parliamentary duties, allowing members to prepare for the upcoming session effectively. The orderly transition is a hopeful indicator of a well-functioning democratic process in Fiji, setting the stage for new discussions and legislation in early 2025.
