Papua New Guinea’s Literary Trailblazer: A Story of Cultural Revival

Baka Barakove Bina, a 60-year-old deputy registrar at the Waigani National Court in Goroka, Papua New Guinea, has captured international attention with his writing. His short story, “Wonem Samting Kamap Lo Mama,” earned him a spot among 26 finalists for the prestigious Commonwealth Short Story Prize, selected from a remarkable 6,730 entrants. This achievement marks Bina as the first writer from Papua New Guinea to have reached this level of recognition.

Bina’s passion for writing flourished in his spare moments at the courthouse as he jotted down thoughts and ideas in a small notebook using vibrant pens. His recent participation in the Melanesian Arts and Culture Festival in Port Vila, Vanuatu, highlighted the importance of writing and artistic expression in promoting cultural heritage.

This narrative echoes the revitalization efforts in Papua New Guinea surrounding its cultural history, such as the ongoing project to document influential figures for the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence. Both Bina’s achievement and the revitalizing biographical project aim to celebrate and acknowledge the diverse voices contributing to Papua New Guinea’s rich cultural tapestry.

As Bina continues his creative journey, his success serves as a beacon of hope, encouraging fellow Papua New Guineans to pursue their passions and contribute to the global literary landscape. This reflects an overall trend of growing recognition for local narratives, fostering a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural identities they uphold.

Bina’s story embodies the spirit of creativity and perseverance, paving the way for future writers from Papua New Guinea and beyond.
