Pacific nations are under increasing pressure due to climate change, illegal fishing, pollution, biodiversity loss, and unsustainable practices, prompting a call for unity and swift action. Baron Waqa, Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, addressed these pressing challenges during the opening of the Pacific Ocean Ministers Preparatory Meeting.

Waqa emphasized the ocean’s critical role in the identity and survival of Pacific countries, calling for a collaborative and integrated approach to ocean management, rooted in scientific expertise and traditional knowledge. He pointed out that this meeting marks a pivotal moment with all ocean-related sectors coming together, indicating a need for a coordinated strategy as the Pacific prepares for the upcoming 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference.

Highlighting the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, Waqa described it not merely as a vision but as a generational obligation. He urged Pacific leaders to translate discussions into action by advocating for issues like ocean finance, governance, gender equality, and youth leadership. He referenced the region’s history of successful initiatives, such as efforts against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing and the establishment of the Pacific Resilience Facility, showcasing that the Pacific can lead on global issues.

With significant global summits on the horizon, including COP30 and the International Conference on Financing for Development, Waqa reiterated that it’s vital for the Pacific to be recognized as a solutions powerhouse rather than as victims of environmental decline. He called for a strong, united front among delegates to amplify their regional voices in upcoming discussions.

This gathering is seen as a significant opportunity to harness the collective strength of Pacific nations and address urgent issues while preparing their representation on global platforms. The plea for solidarity and action underscores the determination of these countries to protect their ocean and cultural identity for future generations, instilling a hopeful perspective that unification can lead to meaningful change.
