A high-level group has been appointed to advance the review of the regional architecture, focusing on delivering an efficient and streamlined public service for Pacific nations, as stated by Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown. Brown recently returned from Fiji, where he attended the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) troika meetings to discuss regional priorities for the upcoming PIF 2025 workplan.

Alongside leaders from Solomon Islands and Palau, Prime Minister Brown endorsed the members of this high-level group, tasked with improving service delivery across Pacific nations through regional organizations. Brown anticipates that once the Forum finalizes the list of appointees, the group will address how regional agencies can better optimize their operations and enhance their service delivery.

He expressed satisfaction with the caliber of nominations, emphasizing that traditional recommendations are insufficient, and change is vital. “Status quo recommendations will not be acceptable,” he remarked, indicating a strong desire for the group to produce actionable insights that will enable leaders to make informed decisions.

This review comes in the wake of numerous discussions held previously at both the Cook Islands and Tonga Forum sessions, highlighting an ongoing commitment to effectively govern and adapt to emerging challenges within the region. Prime Minister Brown expressed confidence in the group’s ability to bring valuable experience and insight to the table while remaining cognizant of the changing circumstances.

He acknowledged the slow pace of progress thus far but remains hopeful that the upcoming report will provide the leaders of the Pacific nations with clear guidance, enabling them to tackle pressing regional issues. As the Honiara Forum approaches in September, Brown looks to leverage the outcomes of the troika discussions to drive significant advancements during his three-year term as chair.

The ongoing dialogues within the PIF reflect a positive and collective commitment among Pacific leaders to address their shared challenges and enhance regional stability, particularly concerning climate change and governance issues. The collaborative efforts indicate a strong determination to forge a resilient future for the Pacific Islands amidst a dynamic global landscape.
