Oceania Rugby has decided to extend the suspension of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Union (PNGRU) for an additional six months, as the organization has yet to provide important documentation regarding its operations. This extension follows nearly a year of efforts to resolve ongoing issues linked to allegations of misconduct and mismanagement that were brought to light by provincial members in June 2024.
The implications of this suspension are significant for PNG Rugby. Notably, the women’s national team recently missed the first round of the 2024 Oceania Rugby Women’s XVs Championships in Brisbane, and neither the men’s nor women’s national sevens teams participated in the Olympic qualifiers held in Monaco. These setbacks exacerbate the ongoing governance challenges faced by the PNGRU.
In response to these challenges, Oceania Rugby has appointed an independent panel comprising respected professionals from across the region. This panel will assess PNGRU’s operational policies and financial statements, aiding Oceania Rugby’s Executive Board in making informed decisions regarding the future of the organization.
Frank Puletua, General Manager of Oceania Rugby, expressed disappointment over the suspension’s extension but emphasized the necessity of an independent review process, stating, “PNG is a very important member of the Oceania Rugby family.” He highlighted that the aim is to see rugby thrive in Papua New Guinea.
The extended suspension, while certainly a challenge, could present an opportunity for PNGRU to initiate essential reforms in governance and operational practices. With a commitment to improved oversight and accountability, there is hope that rugby in Papua New Guinea can reclaim its place within the regional and global rugby communities. By addressing these compliance issues constructively, PNGRU has the potential to revitalize its standing in the sport and foster a positive future for rugby in the country.
