The Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) has established a new headquarters in Brussels, marking a pivotal milestone as the organization celebrates its 50th anniversary. This move is seen as a testament to the organization’s revitalization, aiming to meet the evolving challenges faced by countries in the Global South.

Secretary-General Moussa Batraki emphasized the significance of this transition by signing the deed of purchase. He described it as a defining moment for the OACPS since its inception in 1976 and a physical representation of the OACPS’s commitment to unity and shared global aspirations, as outlined in the revised Georgetown Agreement.

Aligned with Secretary-General Batraki’s reform agenda, this move seeks to fortify the organization’s structure, making it more dynamic and accessible to its 79 member states. The new facility in Brussels is envisioned as a hub for collaboration and innovation, facilitating discussions to drive the priorities of member nations, particularly those pertinent to the Global South.

During the inauguration at the new headquarters, Dr. Khadijah Ossoble Ali, Somalia’s Ambassador to the EU, was warmly welcomed by Secretary-General Batraki. Their discussions centered on Somalia’s active participation in the organization, steps towards regularizing contributions, and ongoing institutional reforms which include an overhaul of the contribution system.

This development follows recent conferences and sessions led by OACPS that focused on strategies for reform and resource mobilization, echoing a renewed commitment to address significant global challenges. Such initiatives have been underscored by the appointment of influential leaders within the organization, as illustrated by Moussa Batraki’s extensive experience in international governance roles.

With the new headquarters and strategic focuses, OACPS aims to drive a more coordinated approach in tackling issues affecting its member states, ranging from climate resilience and economic development to international diplomacy and resource mobilization. This endeavor highlights the organization’s role as a key player in promoting sustainable development across the African, Caribbean, and Pacific regions, fostering hope for a more integrated and resilient future for these communities.
